Pesten komt veel voor bij kinderen. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat een aanzienlijk deel van de kinderen soms of regelmatig gepest wordt [1][19]. Pesten staat echter niet op zichzelf, maar hangt samen met een groot aantal gezondheidsklachten en een laag zelfvertrouwen. Veel gezondheidsklachten volgen op een periode van gepest worden. Kinderen die langdurig worden gepest, lopen grote kans om depressieve of emotionele problemen te ontwikkelen, maar ook lichamelijke klachten. Daarnaast lopen kinderen met sommige specifieke klachten, zoals depressieve of angstige gevoelens, een veel grotere kans om gepest te worden [18]. Vroegtijdige opsporing, ondersteuning vanuit de JGZ en effectieve verwijzing zijn hierbij dan ook geboden en kunnen mogelijk latere gezondheidsproblematiek voorkomen.
Pesten komt vooral voor bij kinderen en jongeren tussen de 4 en 19 jaar. Aan pesten gerelateerde problematiek op het gebied van agressie speelt een rol bij 0- tot 4-jarigen. De jeugdgezondheidszorg (JGZ) heeft verschillende contactmomenten die in de leeftijdsperiode vallen dat kinderen veel gepest worden. Gedurende de contactmomenten – maar juist ook buiten deze contactmomenten – kan de JGZ een belangrijke rol vervullen in preventie en opsporing van pesten en ondersteuning, (door)verwijzing en nazorg bij pesten. Er is op dit moment echter geen uniform beleid voor zowel gepesten als pesters en geen goed zicht op de effectiviteit van het hulpaanbod waar de JGZ naar door kan verwijzen. Deze richtlijn biedt op transparante wijze uniforme aanbevelingen rondom pesten.
